Sentimental Block 2

Companion text to Leaving 2
“There’s always some killing you’ve got to do around the farm”
— Tom Waits

Memories have a habit of arriving unannounced and I get angry at myself for thinking something I didn’t want to think. I am continually chopping away at nostalgia, just like a butcher, attentively severing the unwanted parts of a carcass with a cleaver. The few times I had to kill an animal, there was a disconnection from the death strike, and it is from a similar objective stance that one hacks away at unwanted memories. Is it the opposite of falling in love? Is it me justifying my shortcomings? The labour intensiveness of sculpture making, helps in this process, as the hours working is spent recollecting events and thoughts that brought you to a place where you can make objects for their own sake.
